How to Calculate a Tip — Formula & Examples
The tip calculation is straightforward:
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100)

Quick Mental Math Tricks for Tipping
10% Tip (base)
Move the decimal point one place left. $74.50 → $7.45. This is your base. Double it for 20%, add half for 15%, etc.
20% Tip (easy)
Find 10% (shift decimal), then multiply by 2. $74.50 → 10% = $7.45 → 20% = $14.90. Quick and exact with no calculator.
15% Tip
Find 10%, then find 5% (half of 10%), and add them. $74.50 → $7.45 + $3.73 = $11.18. Works for any bill rapidly.
Round numbers shortcut
Round the bill up to the nearest $5 or $10 first, then calculate. Slightly over-tipping is always appreciated and the math is easier.
Double the tax
In US states with ~8–9% sales tax, doubling the tax gives you roughly 16–18% — a reasonable tip in one glance. Not exact but fast.
Splitting evenly
