Width = proportion of taxable income falling in each bracket
A salary tax calculator estimates how much of your paycheck goes to federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax — and how much you actually take home. The US uses a progressive federal income tax system, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. Your entire income is not taxed at your highest "bracket rate."
This tool uses IRS Tax Year 2025 federal brackets, standard deductions, and FICA rates to give you an accurate estimate. Enter your annual salary, choose your filing status, and optionally add pre-tax deductions (like 401k contributions) and your state tax rate to see your full net take-home pay.
The US uses marginal tax brackets — each bracket rate only applies to the income within that range, not your total salary. Here are the 2025 federal tax brackets for single filers:
| Rate | Single Income Range | Married Filing Jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $0 – $11,925 | $0 – $23,850 |
| 12% | $11,925 – $48,475 | $23,850 – $96,950 |
| 22% | $48,475 – $103,350 | $96,950 – $206,700 |
| 24% | $103,350 – $197,300 | $206,700 – $394,600 |
| 32% | $197,300 – $250,525 | $394,600 – $501,050 |
| 35% | $250,525 – $626,350 | $501,050 – $751,600 |
| 37% | Over $626,350 | Over $751,600 |
On a $100,000 salary (single filer, taking the $15,000 standard deduction): taxable income = $85,000. Tax = 10% of first $11,925 ($1,193) + 12% of next $36,550 ($4,386) + 22% of remaining $36,525 ($8,036) = $13,615 total federal tax — an effective rate of 13.6%, not 22%.
The IRS allows every filer a standard deduction that reduces taxable income before any bracket calculation. Most Americans take this rather than itemizing. The 2025 amounts:
$15,000
Single
$30,000
Married Joint
$15,000
Married Separate
$22,500
Head of Household
401(k) contributions (up to $23,500 in 2025) reduce your federal taxable income dollar-for-dollar. Contributing the max to a 401(k) as a 22% bracket filer saves $5,170 in federal income tax per year. HSA contributions (up to $4,300 self-only) are also triple-tax advantaged — pre-tax contributions, tax-free growth, tax-free qualified withdrawals.
FICA taxes are separate from federal income tax and are taken off the top of gross wages — they are not affected by standard deductions or 401(k) contributions.
Social Security
6.2%
On wages up to $176,100 (2025 wage base). Your employer pays another 6.2%.
Medicare
1.45%
On all wages, no cap. Your employer matches this 1.45%.
Additional Medicare
+0.9%
On wages over $200k (single) or $250k (MFJ). Employee only — employer does not match.
