AVIF to GIF Converter

Convert a static or animated AVIF image into an animated GIF online — set output width, FPS, and capture duration with private in-browser processing using the gifenc encoder, no upload required.

AVIF to GIF Converter

Convert a static or animated AVIF image into an animated GIF right in your browser — no upload, no account, no server required. AVIF delivers far better compression than older formats, while GIF is the universally supported animated image format for email clients, messaging apps, and social platforms. To convert an animated PNG instead, use the Animated PNG to GIF Converter. To convert an animated WebP, try the WebP to Animated GIF Converter. Or explore the full GIF Maker category.

What this tool does

This AVIF to GIF converter turns any AVIF image — static or animated — into an animated GIF entirely inside your browser. No server upload, no account, no waiting. AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is the next-generation image format built on the AV1 video codec, delivering up to 50 % smaller files than JPEG and PNG at the same visual quality. It supports HDR, wide color gamut, and both static and animated sequences.

GIF remains the universal animated image format — supported by every email client, social media platform, messaging app, and browser on earth. Common use cases include converting modern AVIF graphics for email campaigns, sharing animated AVIF stickers in apps that only accept GIF, or producing a legacy-compatible GIF from an AVIF banner. For converting animated PNG instead, use the Animated PNG to GIF Converter. To build a GIF from scratch, try the Animated GIF Maker.

How it works

The tool loads your AVIF file as a browser image element. Modern browsers (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+) can decode AVIF natively — including animated AVIF sequences. Once loaded, the tool samples the rendered image at your chosen FPS by drawing it to a hidden Canvas at regular intervals using setTimeout. For animated AVIF the browser plays the animation and the tool captures each frame as a pixel snapshot.

Each captured frame is colour-quantized to a 256-entry palette using gifenc's perceptual quantizer and written into the GIF byte stream. Once all frames are encoded the finished GIF is assembled in memory and offered for instant download — the file never leaves your device. Adjust output width, FPS, and capture duration to balance quality against file size.

Worked example

Suppose you have a 3-second animated AVIF banner (80 KB — thanks to AVIF’s excellent compression) that you need to include in a marketing email that only accepts GIF. Upload the AVIF — the browser decodes and plays it in the preview. Set output width to 600 px, FPS to 10, and duration to 3 seconds. The output estimate shows 30 frames at 100 ms per frame. Click Convert — the tool captures those 30 frames, quantizes each to 256 colors, and assembles the GIF. Typical result: a 400–800 KB animated GIF that works universally.

For a simple static AVIF photo you want as a still GIF, set duration to 1 second and FPS to 1 — producing a single-frame GIF. If the result looks posterized, that is expected: GIF’s 256-color palette cannot reproduce the HDR or wide-gamut colors that AVIF supports. For best results, use AVIF images with flat colors or limited palettes.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my AVIF to a server?

No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API and the gifenc encoder. Your file is never sent to any server — the GIF is built locally and downloaded directly to your device.

What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG, PNG, and WebP — often 50% smaller at the same quality. It supports HDR, wide color gamut, and both static and animated images. AVIF is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+.

Does this work with animated AVIF files?

Yes, provided your browser supports animated AVIF. The tool renders the AVIF in a browser image element — if the browser plays the animation natively, the tool samples frames at your chosen FPS over the set duration. Chrome and Firefox support animated AVIF. If the GIF appears static, your browser may not support animated AVIF — in that case, convert the video source to GIF with the Video to GIF Converter instead.

Why does the GIF look different from the original AVIF?

GIF supports a maximum of 256 colors per frame with no true alpha transparency. AVIF supports HDR and billions of colors. Gradients, photographic detail, and soft edges will appear posterized in the output GIF — this is a fundamental GIF format limitation, not a defect in the tool.

How do I set the right FPS and duration?

Match the FPS and duration to the AVIF animation. For short stickers and banners, 10 FPS and 2–5 seconds is a good starting point. Lower FPS produces fewer frames and a smaller output file. For a still AVIF, set duration to 1 second.

Why is the output GIF so large?

GIF uses LZW lossless compression with a 256-color palette — it compresses well for flat-color graphics but poorly for photographic content. AVIF achieves far better compression for the same perceptual quality. Reduce the output width, lower the FPS, or shorten the capture duration to keep GIF file size manageable.

Can I load an AVIF from a URL?

Yes. Paste a direct link to a .avif file and click Load AVIF. If the server blocks cross-origin requests (CORS), the browser cannot fetch it — download the file manually and upload it directly instead.
