What Is an Inflation Calculator?
An inflation calculator measures the change in purchasing power of money over time. Because of sustained price increases, a fixed amount of money buys fewer goods and services each year. This tool lets you quantify that erosion โ or calculate how much more money you need in the future to maintain the same standard of living.
It is essential for retirement planning, salary negotiation, investment benchmarking, business pricing, and any long-term financial decision where the time value of money matters.
How to Use This Calculator
- 1Choose a ModeSelect Forward to project future equivalent costs, or Backward to convert past amounts into today's value.
- 2Enter Your Amount & CurrencyType any dollar (or other currency) amount โ a salary, product price, savings balance, or any monetary figure.
- 3Set the Year RangeEnter the start year and end year. Use the quick presets (+5, +10, +20 yrs) to jump ahead instantly.
- 4Select an Inflation RatePick one of the presets (2% low, 3.5% US avg, 7% high) or type a custom rate. Click Calculate to see the full breakdown.
How the Calculation Works
Inflation compounds year over year โ just like interest. The standard formula for calculating an inflation-adjusted equivalent amount is:
Rule of 70: A quick mental shortcut โ divide 70 by the inflation rate to estimate how many years it takes for prices to double. At 3.5%, prices double roughly every 20 years (70 รท 3.5 = 20).
Worked Example
Scenario: Sarah earned a salary of $60,000 in 2014. She wants to know how much salary she would need in 2024 to have the same purchasing power, assuming an average US inflation rate of 3.5% per year.
| Starting salary (2014) | $60,000.00 |
| Annual inflation rate | 3.5% |
| Years elapsed (2014 โ 2024) | 10 years |
| Cumulative factor (1.035)^10 | ร 1.4106 |
| Cumulative inflation | +41.06% |
| Equivalent salary needed in 2024 | $84,636.16 |
| Purchasing power retained | 70.89% |
| Real value lost (at original salary) | $24,636.16 |
Sarah's $60,000 in 2014 only has the purchasing power of $42,533 in 2024 money. To truly maintain her standard of living, she would need a salary of $84,636 โ a raise of over $24,636.
